I have not yet made a statement on behalf of the Canadian Sea Turtle Network with respect to the protests against racism that have swept the world since the murder of George Floyd. I am a white person. I want to make space for voices that are not white voices, particularly on issues of racism. But, at the same time, I do not want my silence to be misinterpreted as a lack of support for communities of colour and indigenous communities.
Let me be clear: The Canadian Sea Turtle Network condemns racism in all its forms. We are also keenly aware that environmental injustice disproportionately negatively affects indigenous communities and communities of colour. We work to create environmental change grounded in social justice. We hope our conduct since we formed in 1999 speaks to our commitment to building a world where all people are valued equally.
I am conscious that as a person with a white body, I am privileged and have blind spots when it comes to racism and issues that grow from racism. But, as the leader of this organization, I can say that I remain committed to listening and learning. I welcome your thoughts on how we can grow and change to more effectively support our brothers and sisters in indigenous communities and communities of colour.

As a white male born in early 60’s and the grandfather of two beautiful indigenous granddaughters, your words are the thoughts of many.
God bless

Wela’lin for your words and actions, and commitment to actively seek solutions and understanding to address racism. Supporting the lead of Indigenous and communities of colour, and their needs and actions is needed.
Thank you. And we completely agree.
I can attest to this. Your organization works well with all races. I have seen it first hand.
Thank you, Janice! We appreciate your comment and support.
