In General, Field Season, Strandings, Turtle Tracks

Well, Stewie has gone a long way. She’s as far south as the state of Virginia.

“It’s been two weeks and she’s travelled over 1,000 kilometres—although definitely not in the direction we’d predict for a leatherback at this time of year,” says Mike, the sea turtle scientist from the DFO Sea Turtle Unit who satellite tagged her.

We’re a little concerned that Stewie hasn’t slowed down yet. We were hoping that by now we would have seen her settling into one spot to feed for a few days. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that all is well.

We’ve posted Stewie’s map on our website, where you can keep an eye on it.

In addition to Stewie’s location, this map is showing the movement of the currents and the temperature of the water. That thick, pink-and-orange line just to the north of Stewie is the Gulf Stream. Thanks to Chris at Florida Leatherbacks for the live mapping.

Absolutely love this information, the turtle travels and the currents shown in that way. Need way more of this scientific research shown. Who knew it is available.
    Thank you very much.

I love these maps for that reason, too! I think the currents are so beautiful to see.

Where can we track Stewie in real time?

Are you able to provide an update on Stewie as of February 2022? Tks!

Hi Catherine! I’m sorry for my delayed reply. Unfortunately, we are no longer hearing from Stewie’s tag, although we have no reason to suspect that anything has happened to her other than the tag has stopped working. We were really disappointed when this happened, but are still hopeful that we will see her on a nesting beach at some point! Thank you for your interest in her!

Thank you for this update. Fingers crossed that she is OK and will be sighted in future.
